चितवनमा गैँडाको आक्रमणमा परी दुई घाइते
Nepal rhino count, Chitwan National Park, April 2015: one-horned rhino spotted after leaving water.
In April 2015, the Nepal Government (Department of National Parks & Wildlife Conservation and Department of Forests) in collaboration with the National Trust for Nature Conservation and WWF conducted a comprehensive count to ascertain the number of one-horned rhinos in the Terai Arc Landscape of Nepal. Within Chitwan National Park this count took place over 3 weeks, and involved 30-plus elephants and 170 field observers and personnel. On 19th April the transect line involved 30 elephants, stretching some 3km, and covered a transect block 16Km long, over 12 hours. Over 100 rhinos were recorded this day alone. The count found that in total there are now 645 rhinos across Nepal's Terai Arc Landscape (605 in Chitwan National Park), a 21% increase in total population from the 534 individuals recorded in 2011.
